WOW! ... With 1 day left before our Big Build, we reached our goal of 200 volunteers. Thank you to Erin Veinotte as our 200th volunteer and of course to you all for signing up to make our day a Great one!

Thursday was a great day ... MacDougall Steel guys did a great job welding getting us ready for the BIG Build on Saturday!

The Beginning - Taking Shape

May 25 - Brian Clark and Heath Glover team up to begin the site work for the new playground equipment. This area will be the home of our flagship piece. It looks small in the photo but it is 67 ft x 38 ft. A nice size footprint for a home.

In the foreground, the old equipment from the old Borden school has been removed. The hole is now ready for a new piece of equipment.

In the background, sod is removed in preparation for the new walking/running track around the soccer field. Thanks to Russell Noonan and Triple J Farms for saving the day by bringing in his equipment to lift the sod.

Remembering our Heroes

2012 Heroes Announced For Amherst Cove Community Playground

Next Saturday, Amherst Cove Consolidated School in Borden-Carleton is celebrating its 20^th anniversary in a big way.  On June 2, 2012, over 150 volunteers will come together to install a new playground, outdoor learning centre and walking track in just one day - a major accomplishment which is being made possible with the help of a National Award from the Let Them Be Kids foundation and other local sponsors. 

A highlight of the day will be the official Opening Ceremony and Dedication that afternoon.  The Amherst Cove Community Park is being dedicated to local heroes. A call was put out to the community for nominations and the committee recently announced the 2012 Community Heroes who will be recognized at next Saturday’s ceremony. They are:

·         Lorraine and the late Melvin Arsenault - long time residents of the community who spent countless volunteer hours supporting local programs and building community recreation facilities;

·          Dr. Senan Cusack, a doctor from Ireland who settled in the community and served the area with his medical practice for more than 40 years;

·         The late Constable Lincoln Keough, an RCMP officer who grew up in Albany and was killed while on duty in Saskatchewan in 1983 when responding to an accident scene, leaving behind his wife and three young daughters;  and

·         Susan Dalziel, a former teacher in the community and a well known driving force behind women’s hockey in PEI who continues to be an outstanding community volunteer. 

“It’s very fitting that this park is honouring local heroes,” said Sandra Jay, school principal and committee member. “We’ve seen so much community support for this playground project  - dedicating the park to community heroes is an extension of that and we plan to continue this legacy for years to come by starting an annual tradition at the school of recognizing the heroes among us.”

Starting in 2013, the graduating class at Amherst Cove Consolidated will be given the opportunity to research, nominate and select the “Hero of the Year”.  Each year the name of the recipient will be added to the sign at the entrance of the park.
